We are all familiar with Aesop’s fable where the brash, overconfident hare loses to the slow and steady tortoise. In this box figurine, carver David Lawrence depicts the hare lounging atop the tortoise. Is the hare really that nervy, or have the two racers decided that friendship outpaces competition? Interestingly, in certain cultures such as the Cherokee, Zambian and Korean, the tortoise is depicted as a sly and cunning trickster. Regardless of the personalities, all of these fables are meant to teach us humans important life lessons.
